DOMAIN NAME AND HOSTING
I chose to go with Bluehost. I know there are other hosting companies out there that are great options but if you are just getting started, Bluehost offers a super affordable package to get you up and running fast. My package included a free domain name.
I choose to use WordPress for my site. It is super easy to get it up and running without having to have a ton of HTML or web page design knowledge. There are lots of free themes but if you can afford one, I highly recommend upgrading to a premium theme. More on themes in just a minute, but first we need to get the bones of our site….
genesis framework
Why Genesis is the Foundation of Any Smart WordPress DesignThe Genesis Framework from StudioPress is the way to go. It is the bones of your site. Paired with a child theme, it ensures that you won’t lose your custom settings during site updates. You can purchase just Genesis Framework or if you you want a great deal, they do offer bundles of the framework and a child theme.
Choose a Responsive wordpress theme
There are hundreds of theme stores but I recommend purchasing your child theme from one of these. You want a child theme from a designer with a reputation for providing not only a quality product but also excellent support as you are getting started.
- StudioPress. If it is sold via Studiopress, it is almost guaranteed to be well-coded and come with great support.
- Restored316. I personally have purchased several child themes from Lauren. Their documentation and support is hands down amazing!
